Bethany Jewell

2019 Grand Marshall

Bethany is 27 years old and lives in Fort Wayne with her Mom and Dad. Bethany received a certificate of completion from Northside High School and has since been involved with Easter Seals ARC, the Down Syndrome Association of Northeast Indiana (DSANI) and GiGi’s Playhouse.

Bethany loves to dance and has taken ballroom dance through Special Olympics and is currently taking interpretive dance through Fort Wayne Dance collective. She loves animals, and has 5 small dogs. She is currently volunteering at Hope for Animals where she helps price and stock items in the store (in-between greeting all the cats and dogs that come through the door for services). She also has her own brand of dog treats and dog bandanas (Bethany’s Bow-Wow Bakery and Boutique) that she makes with her mom and sells to friends and family.

Bethany loves to cook and is volunteering at GiGi’s Health Food Bar where she has learned to make smoothies and sandwich wraps along with giving her the opportunity to work on her people skills and money skills. She also loves babies and enjoys playing with them.

Bethany has been volunteering for the last 7 years feeding the homeless of Fort Wayne. She is loved by this community, and they miss her if she is not there. She helps prepare a meal twice a month and serves the meal along with handing out toiletries and smiles.

Bethany enjoys horseback riding and looks forward to going to camp at Camp Red Cedar with her friends from DSANI. She enjoys attending the Buddy Walk each year and going to the many DSANI get togethers where she can be with her friends.

About the DSANI Buddy Walk

The Buddy Walk® is a walk in which anyone can participate without special training. The walk route is approximately 1.2 miles along downtown Fort Wayne streets around Parkview Field.  September 14, 2019 has been declared DSANI BUDDY WALK® DAY in Fort Wayne! This acceptance and advocacy Walk is also an inspirational and educational event that celebrates the many abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. Whether you are living with Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, we would love for you to join us for the 21st Annual Buddy Walk at Parkview Field.

The DSANI Buddy Walk® is the second largest Buddy Walk® in Indiana! The Buddy Walk® is a trademarked program that was created by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to assist local parent groups in their advocacy efforts. With more than 275 walks taking place in our city and around the country and abroad, we are able to speak with a unified and stronger voice in creating awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome. Once you cross the “Finish Line”, the dance party begins with activities and entertainment. Fun is sure to be had by all!

Our 2019 Buddy Walk fundraising goal is $95,000 which will help us enhance the lives of people living with Down syndrome, advocate on their behalf, provide information and support to families and professionals and promote acceptance and inclusion. Because DSANI receives no local, federal or state funding, the success of our organization is largely dependent on the success of the Buddy Walk®.  We need your help to make this year’s Buddy Walk the best one yet – so that we may continue, and expand upon, the programs, events and outreach efforts that we provide every day!  We can’t wait to share the day with you!
